A series of advanced weather service points has been put into use in Oulu. The service points create a network suitable for the measuring and monitoring of weather in the City and its surroundings. The weather service points transmit images and data on temperatures, wind speed and humidity, for example, in Nallikari, the Market Place, Peltola, Raksila, Kaukovainio, Merikoski bridges and Hailuoto on the Internet.

The weather network station offers accurate, regional information on weather to citizens and enterprises, as well as supporting research and innovation. For example, it is possible to forecast the near-future changes in the weather by monitoring the changes in wind speed and temperature. The real impact of cold weather can also be found from the wind speed and temperature values.

The weather service network will first be utilised as a part of the OLLI service, which provides information on the traffic in the Oulu region. The City of Oulu is planning to utilise the data from the weather stations in its sports and communication services. In addition, Nokia, VTT, University of Oulu and Oulu University of Applied Sciences will use the network in their research and development work. An objective is also to allow enterprises developing software applications to build applications and services that utilise the data from the weather stations.

In the future, the weather station service will be extended and new measured parameters will be introduced. Interest has been expressed in the assessment of snowfall and slippery conditions.
